Family photography is about capturing memories that last a lifetime, and the setting plays a significant role in making those memories special. The season, in particular, can play a role in your comfort level too. (Florida summer heat is hot, hot, hot, but winter may not be for everyone either!)
Winter Park, Florida, is a treasure trove of scenic beauty and charm, making it the perfect backdrop for family photos year-round. Whether it’s spring flowers, summer and fall sunshine, or winter’s cooler temperatures, Winter Park offers something magical in every season.
It’s no surprise that my favorite time for family photos is during late winter with the promise of a new year ahead or late fall, when the temperatures are cooler and the holidays are right around the corner. But let’s dive into the benefits of summer and spring as well with my general suggestions of what to wear for your family session, depending on the season.
As Central Florida awakens from its mild winter, vibrant flowers and lush greenery are renewed and take center stage. A Winter Park family photo location like Mead Botanical Garden provides a colorful and refreshing setting for family portraits. Spring’s gentle weather is ideal for outdoor sessions, allowing families to relax and enjoy the experience.
What to Wear: Soft pastels and light fabrics complement the springtime scenery beautifully.
Summer in Winter Park is all about golden light and lush landscapes. While I don’t particularly recommend a summer session due to the heat, it’s possible if your schedule only allows this season.
The tree-lined paths of Central Park and the lakeside views at Dinky Dock Park shine bright during this time of year. While it can be warm, early morning photos during summer in Winter Park (or golden-hour sessions) ensure the weather is comfortable and the light is breathtaking. I plan my summer sessions early in the morning, just after sunrise. The time may be early for non-early birds, but it is worth it for relief from the heat.
What to Wear: Bright, bold colors match the energy of summer sessions.
While Florida doesn’t experience traditional fall foliage or fall temperatures like family sessions in New York, for example (where I’m originally from), Winter Park’s parks and gardens take on a softer, golden tone in autumn.
The warm hues of Casa Feliz and the serene atmosphere of Kraft Azalea Garden are perfect for capturing cozy, intimate family moments. Fall is a popular season for family photography as people gear up for holiday cards and gifts.
What to Wear: Earth tones and layered outfits add warmth and texture to fall photos.
Winter in Winter Park is usually mild and inviting, with crisp air and fewer crowds outside when it’s chilly! The soft, diffused light during this season creates a dreamy atmosphere, perfect for capturing timeless family portraits.
Locations like Kraft Azalea Garden or the elegant architecture of Rollins College offer striking backdrops that feel calm and serene. Be mindful of sunset being much earlier in the day during winter than it is for summer, which could be a benefit if you have young kids with an early bedtime.
What to Wear: You can get away with long sleeves and not feel like you’re going to sweat as soon as you step outside during winter. Take advantage of the cooler temps with sweaters, pants, and boots, but make sure they’re fitted garments so you’re confident in photos.
Winter Park’s versatility as a photography destination comes from its variety of locations and its ability to shine in every season. From lush gardens and charming architecture to sparkling lakes and vibrant parks, the city offers many options for families seeking memorable photo sessions.
As a Winter Park family photographer, I love helping families discover the perfect backdrop that matches their style and story, no matter the time of year.
